                                                                     Bachelor's or Master's thesis

                                                                                  on the topic of
Qualitative Evaluation of Sensor-Based Interviewing in Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetics
                                                                     in Cooperation with TU Dresden

The Junior Professorship for Nutritional Sociology at the University of Bayreuth, in cooperation with the research group "Prevention and Care of Type 2 Diabetes" led by Prof. Schwarz at the University Hospital of TU Dresden, offers an exciting opportunity to write a bachelor's or master's thesis.

Background:
As part of a comprehensive study on type 2 diabetes, the innovative concept of sensor-based interviewing is to be evaluated. This concept combines continuous blood glucose monitoring with an interview intervention to give participants a better understanding of the influence of lifestyle factors (e.g., diet, exercise) on their blood glucose levels. The goal is to improve participants' self-management skills and quality of life through personalized counseling.
While the primary focus of the study is on quantitative methods, a bachelor's or master's thesis will also employ qualitative methods (guided interviews) to better understand the mechanisms behind changes in endpoints such as HbA1c levels, self-management, and quality of life in the intervention group.

Possible questions for the qualitative part:
• Which factors contribute to improving the endpoints?
• Is the combination of interview intervention and sensor technology crucial, or is the use of sensor technology sufficient?

Tasks of the thesis:
The qualitative component of the study will be addressed within the framework of this bachelor's/master's thesis. This includes:
• Development of a qualitative research design (guided interviews).
• (Guide) data collection in close collaboration with the research group in Dresden.
• Data analysis: Analysis of the interview transcripts with reference to the experiences, challenges, and changes brought about by sensor-based interviewing.

Requirements:
• Interest in qualitative research methods, nutritional sociology, and health science issues.
• Previous experience in conducting and analyzing qualitative interviews is an advantage.
• Independent and structured working style.
2
Supervision:
Supervision is provided by the Junior Professorship for Nutritional Sociology (University of Bayreuth) and the research group of Prof. Schwarz (TU Dresden). The work will be carried out in close coordination with both locations.

Framework:
• Start: By arrangement, ideally soon (summer 2025)
• Results of the qualitative data collection are expected by the end of 2025, so that the work can be planned accordingly.
Application: Interested students should send a short letter of motivation and details of their degree program to: tina.bartelmess@uni-bayreuth.de

We look forward to receiving your application and working together on this exciting research project!
